“Güney’s films are the essence of life.” So declares Michael Haneke in this magnificent documentary portrait of Kurdish filmmaker, actor and political dissident Yilmaz Güney (1937-1984). Through interviews with family, friends and colleagues, as well as clips from his films and rare footage of the man himself, Hüseyin Tabak brilliantly explores Güney’s enduring legacy. This includes his final film, the Palme d’Or-winning masterpiece Yol (1982)—which Güney famously directed from inside a Turkish prison.
