Spirit of ’45 (Silver Screening)
Director: Ken Loach
Running Time: 94′
On election day, the East End Film Festival revisits the time when Britain created the NHS with a special screening of Ken Loach’s Spirit of ‘45. Tracing the story of a nation coming together in the aftermath of World War Two, Loach’s film celebrates the sense of national unity, and a desire to care for one another in the face of the suffering caused by conflict. As well as the NHS, 1945 saw the government committing to a good home for everyone and a share in Britain’s industrial prosperity. Using a variety of incredible archive footage, Spirit of ‘45 is a feelgood portrait of political and social possibility, by Britain’s master chronicler of ordinary lives. A perfect film for a divisive election.
