Effort to Waste: Raw Dialogues in DIY Punk

EFFORT TO WASTE

East End Film Festival and CUERO OBRA Present EFFORT TO WASTE: RAW DIALOGUES IN DIY PUNK

A group show exploring visual art and ephemera generated by punks themselves. Within these records and representations we are given a fragmented glimpse into interconnected punk scenes. The exhibition gathers a group of self-sufficient artists, many of whom will be showing their work in a gallery context for the first time.

– OPENING NIGHT; 20th April 6 – 10pm / FREE ENTRY

At Gallery 46
A contemporary art gallery based in Whitechapel, London.

46 Ashfield St, Whitechapel, London E1 2AJ

GROUP SHOW PARTICIPATING ARTISTS:

BEN HILLS is part of the flourishing young Brighton hardcore scene, playing in bands Vile Spirit and Bodily Fluids. Their photos depict both the raw intensity of punk shows as well as intimate portraits of friends and bandmates. This will be the first ever exhibition of their work.

JACK PITT is photographer whose work encompasses global punk shows, touring with his bands (Jackals, Sonic Order, and Midnight Parasite), and his research as a PhD history student studying Slovenian/Yugoslav punk.

JYOTI WARIYAR is an artist whose paintings have appeared on numerous gig posters, as well as acting as artwork for her own bands Runt and Farce.

RHYLLI OGIURA’s photographs act as a visual diary of her life in New York City’s punk scene, and snapshots of her travels around the world as the vocalist in the band Krimewatch.

SIMON MARSHAM is a photographer documenting punk shows around Europe, whose first photozine FIGURATIVE THEATRE #1 was recently self-published; this will be the first exhibition of this work. He also plays in the bands Fex Urbis and Maladia.

TIN SAVAGE is an illustrator whose distinctive imagery has been seen on posters, artwork and t-shirts for the likes of The Flex, Gag, The Lowest Form and others. His self-produced GLUTTONY ZINE from 2017 was his first collection of work, and he also provides vocals in the band Asid.

Sunday 22nd April at 4.30pm screening:
PUNKFILM INTERNATIONAL GIG #000.5::
The International Punkfilm Videomix

PUNKFILM INTERNATIONAL GIG #000.5::

The International Punkfilm Videomix

Ripped from the darkest corners of online moving image archives, “The International Punkfilm Videomix” is a compilation of rarely-seen snippets of both punkdom and punxsploitation: short films, performance footage, experiments, commercials, documentaries, animation and music videos reflecting an international context for punk completely outside of the Anglo-American scenes.

The partially-unsubtitled, sixty-minute video will include:

– A punk hair styling demonstration.
-D-beat legends Anti-Cimex releasing their 1984 Victims of a Bomb Raid 7”
-Croatia’s answer to G.G. Allin: Satan Panonski,
-Charged Swedish ladypunx singing an ode to their favorite soft drink.
-Latvian youth in revolt!
-Slovenian synthwave video art.
-Punk house parties during martial law in Poland.

Compiled by Herb Shellenberger:

Curator, writer, former gig booker and DJ with the “England Belongs to Twee” disco (2006-11), Philadelphia’s only club night dedicated to hard-as-nails oi! punk and soft-as-a-kitten twee pop. Strength through Twoi!
His previous videomix “CAVE GIRLS + TRASHY FASHIONS: Unseen Post-Punk Videos by Women” (2016) has been screened in art centers, universities and punk squats in Germany, Taiwan and the United States, and is available to show publicly for free.

PUNKFILM INTERNATIONAL is an upcoming screening series highlighting films both documenting punk scenes internationally and those made through a similar DIY context and ethos.
