One of the bravest, boldest British feature films of the past decade, Rafael Kapelinski’s debut feature takes us deep into teenage lives subsumed in sex and pornography. Going where other films fear to tread, it follows three friends: Kyle, Jarred and Jake, each of whom are deeply consumed by sexual drives that are taboo. Jake, though, is a different case altogether, with his own proclivities a danger to himself and others. Shot in black and white on the streets of South London, Butterfly Kisses features standout performances from its young cast, and a scene winning turn from Shane Meadows regular Thomas Turgoose. With fiercely brave insight and sure-handed dramatic control, Butterfly Kisses is a milestone piece of British drama, announcing a potent new directorial voice.
Also screening on Saturday 1 July at Curzon Aldgate.
