The reality of the recent protests in Ferguson, Missouri is captured with startling immediacy in debut directors Damon Davis and Sabaah Folayan’s Whose Streets? An extraordinary portrait of civic anger and organised activism, Davis and Folayan’s film embeds itself within the Ferguson community in the aftermath of the death of Michael Brown, utilising personal encounters, and the footage and social media feeds of those on the ground to paint a palpable, immediate portrait of a community expressing its grief, shock and anger. The claustrophobic, strong-arm intervention of the state brings home both the alarmingly militarised nature of American policing, and its escalatory response to African American communities. A vital, blistering, defining film in the era of Black Lives Matters.
