‘During eight days of film festivities the East End rejoices in its diverse cultural and plethora of new talent.

During April the East End will host over a week of films screenings and events to celebrate both new and established talent in the visual arts. Alongside films there will be workshops, talks and parties, which encompass fashion, music and comedy.

Opening night, on Thursday 19th April, will be a gala evening screening of a biography of internationally acclaimed local artists Gilbert and George.

... As well as local features, films from Singapore, Germany, Holland, Sweden, Japan, Spain and the USA will also be shown.

... One of the most enjoyable things about the East End Film Festival, which is supported by Tower Hamlets Council, is the broad range of viewing opportunities it offers.

Choosing the best work from local filmmakers and showing it alongside international films allows the audience to see both in different contexts, emphasising the cultural diversity and artistic variation that exists in the area today.’

‘There’s no rhyming slang term for “film festival” but that hasn’t deterred the organisers of this event designed not only to celebrate East End culture but also to advance and inspire new local talent...’

The documentary film-maker Julian Cole’s portrait of Gilbert and George is the opening night film at the east End film Festival - appropriately enough, as the director spent a great deal of time with the artist duo at their Spitalfields home and studio during the 17 years he spent filming them.

..."When you go round to Gilbert and George’s restored wood-panelled house (it’s like a creaking ship) they just make you a cup of instant coffee.” says Cole. “they don’t have a kitchen because the don’t want to be distracted from their life’s mission of creating and exhibiting their art. They eat in local cafes to same time.”

..."At the time nobody was interested in a film about them,” recalls Cole. “What a different story it is now.” The last of Cole’s footage shows the pair at the opening of their major retrospective at Tate Modern in February.

Other festival highlights include a sneak preview of Julien Temple’s ‘Joe Strummer: the Future is Unwritten”, the UK premiere of John Pilger’s “The War on Democracy”, a master class with the “Last King of Scotland” producer Andrew Macdonald, whose new film “28 Weeks Later” is set in Canary Wharf, and more than 100 sorts about the East End - some by local film-makers, including Tessa Garlands’s three-minute super market horror film “Zombie”, shot on a mobile phone.
